Greetings all, I hope you are enjoying some summer cycling and managing to dodge the showers.
The TT season is coming to an end but our members seem to have a never-ending enthusiasm for
seeking out challenges on an epic scale. We currently have 2 members undertaking the London –
Edinburg- London event, tough enough without a named storm to contend with, good luck to Kath
and Jed. Don’t forget to take a look at ‘one from the archive’ at the end of the newsletter to see
confirmation that members of the Wheelers have always liked to take on these challenges.
July saw the completion of the 10-mile Time Trial series and the Championship 10. A big thank you to
Harry and Sophie for organising them and for the marshals and time keepers which allow them to go
ahead. Well done to all those that took part and it was great to see Malcolm Yates competing in the
Championship 10, a mere 60 years after he first took part. We have one 7-mile race to come, the
Ladies 7 and then the season finale Hill Climb after which the gambling kicks up another level for the
downhill freewheel competition.
John Scott at 81 years-old completed the NC 500, a great achievement which required cycling some
of Scotland’s iconic roads and mountains via; Strathcorran, Gairloch, Ullapool, Wick, Golspie and
getting several Strava PBs for climbing along the way, well done John.
Don’t forget that SWCC will contribute £5 towards the entry fee for the Jet Ride on 13th September.
More information about the Jon Egging Trust can be found here: JETRide 2025 | Jon Egging Trust
SWCC have always encouraged riders to support this worthy cause and to take part in this event.
This year we are also refunding our members £5 towards the cost of entry. All you need to do is
forward your completed entry form to me with relevant bank details so we can transfer you the
money.
A reminder that the second Introductory Ride will take place on Sunday 10th August. If you are new
to the Club, not sure whether a club ride is for you or you just want to get to know more about the
Club, then we would like to invite you along. The ride will be a short ride of approximately 20 miles.
They will meet at Sleaford Market Place at 09:00 and then depart at 09:15, please note however, the
café stop will be at the end of the ride. In summary, these rides are to introduce you to SWCC and let
you cycle at a distance and time that is comfortable for all, the ride is a no-drop ride and will be
ridden at the pace of slowest rider on the day, so there is no pressure to try and keep up.
Dates for rides:
Fancy a weekend cycling? Why not consider next year’s York Cycling Festival. The current view would
be to travel up at the start of the weekend, take part in a Club ride on the Saturday and then go
along to the festival; Focus Rides will be setting up the ramp for Chris Close! Date to be confirmed
and I will keep you updated in future newsletters.
The Club is always keen to promote safer riding but unfortunately accidents and incidents do
happen. It is because of this that Ride Leaders now have cameras installed on Club Rides, as we have
learnt from experience that the Police are much more likely to take action if video evidence is
available. A comprehensive overview of reporting incidents is available on our Website:
Sleaford Wheelers: Recording Rides for Safety
As Kath Smith and Jed Friskney head out to complete the London – Edinburgh – London event (958
miles in 5.3 days) I thought it was worth noting that on the 6th July 2025, Molly Weaver broke the
Guinness World Record for the fastest circumnavigation of Britain by bike (7730 kilometres), in a
time of 21 days, 10 hours, 48 minutes.

Stu Mckellar and Dennis Owen competing in 1999 and note Dennis also completing the Lands’ End to John O’Groats ride. The ever-present Malc Yates also features.
Kind regards
Nige
