"It'll be different when I've got a number on my back"
                                                                                            -Priestley

After a miraculous thaw, a hint of spring greeted a smallish turnout for the club run to Farndon today.  Present and correct were: Me (nursing a cold), Sparrow (nursing a different cold), Stu, Smedley, Priestley, Dave Reeves, Scotty and Rich Hamblin.  Myself and Smedley took the group out into a stiff breeze towards Culverthorpe with a variety of volunteers sharing the work thereafter until the welcome descent down through Londonthorpe.  Belton turned out to be partially underwater but Sparrow bravely rode through what amounted to a smallish duck pond, didn't drown and consequently proved it to be safe for the rest of us. We ploughed on towards Marston saluting our club sponsor on the Grantham Road along the way.  The wind wasn't particularly helpful at this point but some shelter could be found if you stayed away from the front!  Dry Doddington continues to exist in a strange parallel universe where the opposite is true; it was as wet and muddy as ever! This prompted Smedley to ponder the question as to what sort of person goes out in winter in a white cycling jacket. He didn't have to look too far with Priestley riding in front sporting his Assos windcheater.  Question answered conclusively I think.  We finally made it to the cafe at Farndon, which, despite numerous witty comments from the group about closed cafes etc., was open and newly refurbished.  After briefly losing Scotty, we all re-fuelled and psyched ourselves up for the return journey.  After me being half-wheeled by Smedley for a few miles, Priestley was shoved on to the front to replace me and uttered the titular phrase.  To be honest, he was going well enough anyway and he and Smedley needed to be reined in a little to make sure we all stayed together. There was a bit of a kerfuffle at the Balderton turn involving Stu and Scotty but we eventually re-grouped and whizzed down through Claypole and Stubton jostling for position for the Hough on the Hill climb.  Smedley was first up with Stu showing good form as usual when the road goes up. I was dangling off the back a bit by now but managed to claw my way back before the descent to The Scroop. Sparrow shot off for a lunch appointment and the remaining few rolled back into Rauceby having parted company with Dave and Scotty. A splendid day all round!  Tune in next week for more sarcasm and bullying of a hilarious nature whilst riding bicycles...same time same place...go on, you know you want to! Check Facebook if weather looks shaky.

P.S. Scotty's latest training regime involves riding his turbo at 11:00 pm...Brailsford, take note.

CLUB DINNER SUNDAY THE 10TH FEBRUARY

LRRA Dinner Saturday 2nd

Hi to you all,
As you may know, all Open Events for 2013 are now live on the CTT website. Many of you will no doubt already be planning your season for 2013.
It is to be hoped that the Sleaford Wheelers (Charity) '10' will be a part of those plans. As usual this Annual Event is on the afternoon of Easter Saturday which this year is on 30th March. Sleaford Wheelers are proud to once again link this popular TT to Cancer Research UK.
Seasonal Prizes are donated to this event and all monies in excess of necessary expenses are donated to our chosen Charity. Over £1000 was handed over following last years event that received a record entry of 106 riders.
Course C10/10 is a single carriageway out and home course with, in the main, a good surface and is the clubs regular club event course. It has a course record of 20-30 set by Jim Coleman (Witham Wheelers).
Sleaford Wheelers CC look forward to receiving another bumper entry. Entries offically close at 6pm on March 19th but may be held open for a few further days.Entries are acceptable via the CTT Internet Entry System(Click), or if using snail mail (Form Here) they should be sent to:

Doug Laidlow, 17 Fen Road, Little Hale, Sleaford, Lincs. NG34 9BD.

Along with a completed CTT Entry Form (you will find one attached to this email) and the Entry Fee of £8. (Cheques to be made payable to D.Laidlow).

Yours in Sport, Doug Laidlow.

PS. You might also like to make a note in your diary of the Nev Crane Memorial '25'. The 7th Edition of this event will be on July 14th. In 2012 a record number of 115 entries came in. Once again in excess of £800 will be up for grabs with £200 of it set aside just for the Ladies for whom it will be a BBAR counting event.
The single carriageway C25/35 has a course record set by Matt Bottrill of 51-17. The ladies course record is held by Wendy Houvenaghel in 54-17.

Hi folks - just noticed an error on the Club Championship Block Entry form - last year the event was in August, this year's event is on Sunday 1 September as shown in the Club Events Information list I sent round a few days ago - please note the change (particularly those of you who were thinking of riding the Welsh CA 12-hour as it clashes!)
Kath

Date for your diaries.... Saturday 21st July.
We have been asked to get involved with this year's Sleaford Carnival, as we used to in the past. The roads will be closed and we are hoping to be part of the Float procession. More information to follow!

Spring update

- well, it's almost spring and we had good weather for this morning's Hilly TT, the first event of the season (fabulous ride Richard).  Just a few reminders:
1.  Have you paid your subs for 2013?  If not, you will not be able to compete in time trials,  so get payment (£15 for Seniors) to me immediately
2.  A final reminder for the LRRA Middlemarkers '25' - it's probably too late now to get your entry in by post so you'll have to do an internet entry or make an excuse to get out on your bike and ride up to North Hykeham to post the entry through the organiser's door - full details on the CTT Website, and on the events list sent round recently; remember entry fees for Juvenile and Junior riders is just £5 (you may have to claim a refund from the event organiser if you enter on line, as I don't think it allows you to select an alternative entry fee) so come on you younger riders, let's have some riders in the event.  Remember every rider who enters and starts the event gets points for the Club, all of which go towards the final tally at the end of the year; we've been the best club in Lincolnshire several times in the past and can do it again.
3.  If you're not riding an event (especially a Club event) - are you able to marshall?  Remember without other people marshalling, no-one can ride so even if you're not riding one or two events because of fatigue, minor injury etc - just contact Rose Pell (07970 121112 or email rose.pell@chandlersfe.co.uk) and let her know - it may just give the more regular marshalls a chance for them to get in a ride or two.
4.  Spinning at Osbournby Village Hall (£3 per session) has been extended by popular request so now goes on through to the end of March (every Thursday, from about 7.15pm) - that means there are 4 more sessions available for you to join in
5.  Don't forget you can pre-enter (at a discount too!) both the 7-mile and 10-mile league series - see the club's website and also the event info which I sent out recently.

Happy riding to you all
Kath

***  please note  ***

I am in urgent need of volunteers to help at this event, particularly from those who do not mind travelling down to the southerly and easterly points of this course, or hopefully, those who live in that area, as that is where I have a shortage.

I already have about 24 helpers (excluding timekeepers, signing on clerks, results board, those erecting signs, etc).
However, I need about the same number again.  This varies depending on whether people can help out for the morning event, or the afternoon one, or both.

The course is listed on the District Website (www.tinyurl.com/cttlincs)  – it is the C25/1 which starts at Gibbet Nook near Tattershall, goes south to Langrick, through Antons Gowt, Frith Bank, then through Frithville, north to Revesby, and on to finish just beforeTumby roundabout.

The event HQ is the Gartree Community School at Tattershall.

Can you please get in touch with me as soon as possible about this, or if you would like more details.

Thanks very much

=========================================================================

Hi everybody

Without marshalls, caterers, signing-on officials, pushers-off, timekeepers and of course event promoters there would be no races for you to ride.  Can you give a little time and put something back into the sport (I know some of you already do, so thanks).  Help is needed:

1.  Rose needs marshalls for the evening events (if she doesn't have enough, it may be you who is asked to give up your ride on that night) - contact her on 07970 121112, even if it's just to help out on one night when you don't feel like competing

2.  Barkston Heath Wednesday sessions start tomorrow, 24th April and run every two weeks until mid-August; most of the helpers and officials are provided by Witham Wheelers so we really need to give them some support.  Can you  help the coaches, or with signing on?  Gates open 6.00pm - and remember it's only once every two weeks

Please see here(click) for details of Barkston Heath Wednesday evenings - please note these are coaching sessions, and although there will be coach-led 'races' for riders at the end of each evening these are not open to seniors who simply want to come along to race (it's an insurance issue if we allow that!) - if anyone can put up a copy of the notice in a local shop/post office/village hall/school etc I'd be very grateful.

Please note the addition this year of a dedicated Ladies Group to help those who need a bit of confidence in group riding, taking a drink whilst riding etc etc

Thanks, Kath

Novice Run

There will be a novice run this Sunday the 14th, starting at 9:00am in the market place and probably running out to Ropsley and then over to Billingborough way on and back towards Sleaford 25-30 miles somewhere between 12-14mph depending on who turns up, if there is a mix of abilities I will try to accommodate.

If you are new to riding and not sure about your fitness the ride leader will be happy to discuss this with you (we were all beginners once so don't be shy) and doing so will enable them to plan the ride accordingly and / or to give advice regarding training to reach this level. (a little more info here (click). (Chris Close)

Hello to you all,
How time seems to fly on by. Soon it will be time for the 7th edition of the Nev Crane Memorial '25'. July 14th is the date. Is it possible that last years cracking record entry of 115 riders could be topped? Nothing taken for granted of course, which is why I like to put it about in the weeks prior to closing date which will be July 2nd.
This event is open to Internet Entry via the CTT webswite which accounted for 75% of the entries received in 2012. Postal or By Hand entries are also gratefully excepted. The Prospectus for the event is as detailed below.
I look forward to receivng your entry. I will not mind at all if you mention this event to others.

Regards,

Doug Laidlow,

Event Sec.,

£200 ring fenced just for the Ladies and they still have chances to win in the main awards. After all, didn't Wendy come within 20 seconds of winning the event two years ago? There may be more prizes for Juveniles and Juniors dependng on the level of entry.
No restrictions either on how many awards one can take from this event. Win it, Take it.

Rescheduled 10!!!

The 10 cancelled on the 9th May has been rescheduled for the 30th May

Social Event!

I am proposing a Sleaford Wheelers social on the Poacherline Batemans Beer Train on Thursday 6th June as there is no time trial that Thursday. Some Striders want to come along too.

With the present train timetable (which might change by June) we would meet at Sleaford Station at 18:45 on Thursday 6th June as the train would leave at 18:55.

Basically, you can buy beer and listen to live music on the train to Wainfleet, then there is a short walk to the Batemans Brewery where the music listening and beer drinking continues…same again on the way back to Sleaford! You will be back at 22:00 so it’s not a late night.

Cheers!

Kate

Hello Sleaford Wheelers: Marholm Sportive

This will take place from Marholm Village Hall, near Peterborough, on Sunday 19th May. Distances of 100 miles, 70 miles or 50 miles. Cost is just £10 and is all going to local good causes.

See http://www.peterborough5x5challenge.orgfor further details. Entry is also online via British Cycling. The organisers are all local club cyclists, and we have plenty of community support for cakes and Feed Stations etc. We organised the same Sportive last year in aid of Help for Heroes. This year other local good causes will benefit.

Kit

As I am sure you will be aware we have had one or two issues with getting hold of the new club kit, as discussed again at last night's committee meeting. I now have free reign to be as rude to them as I wish, so hopefully we'll see some action very shortly! If I'm doing the kit again next year we won't be using the same company, it may be nice stuff but the delays are getting a little silly.
Anyway, the upside to this is that those of you who would like any extra items, or newbies wishing to invest in some proper riding gear, haven't yet missed the boat.
If anyone would like anything either drop me a message (andy_howett@yahoo.co.uk) or see me at either the 25m race tonight or the Saturday or Sunday club run

Cheers,
Crasher

Appeal from George for help THIS SATURDAY!

Just wondering if there is any people spare to help out on the day of Sleafords Barkston Heath pedal pushers league race on the 6th. Either full day (9.30 – 4) or even just for a morning etc. It would be good to get a few people from the club there helping or RACING!?

Novice run

What an amazing Novice run today (28 July) with 12 riders going out and 13 coming back! 35 miles (ish) a decent Café stop (what is it with cyclists and cake?) and an overall average of around 14mph, well done to all, it was thoroughly enjoyable and I hope it has wetted your appetite for the next one. To see the run click here http://connect.garmin.com/player/349516796  you can play it back using the buttons. (ignore the bit after Sleaford I forgot to stop my Garmin)

Sleaford Carnival

Sleaford Wheelers are organising a series of bike challenges at the Sleaford Carnival on 21st July from 9am-5pm on the Boston Road Recreation Ground including a drop in session with a timed bike skills test every hour and timed turbo sessions. Children are encouraged to bring their bikes along with them so they can have a go!

Championship 10 & Hardriders 25
Hi Everyone
If you haven’t completed a block entry now is the time to think about entries for the forthcoming championship events.
Championship 10 – Thursday 8th August @ 1845 on our usual 10 course (C10/10) HQ – The Horseshoes, Silk Willoughby.
Hardriders 25 – Sunday 25th August @ 1000 on Sleaford to Spittlegate course (C25/34) – This event replaces the Sleaford to Skegness event so additional to the usual prizes there will be a fastest novice award for our new members. HQ – A15 Silk Willoughby Layby.
Entry forms with £3.50 per event need to come to me either at the Thursday night 10’s or by post to 20 Pound Road, Martin, LINCOLN, LN4 3QX
I’d rather get most entries together before the event so I can set the fields out rather than on the day please.
If you are not able to ride then I will as usual need marshals at Osbournby RAB for the 10, and Osbournby and Spittlegate RAB for the 25. I may also need timekeepers/number spotters. Please email me if you are available at racesecretary@sleafordwheelers.co.uk
Cheers, Richard

Returning on the 21:10 train from Wainfleet arriving at Sleaford at 22:00 so it's not a late one! Please let us know if you are thinking of going.

Sleaford Music Train

Just a reminder that several wheelers are reckoning to be going for an evening out on “The Music Train” on Thursday evening (19th) meeting at around 6:30 to group up and get tickets. If 4 people get together they can buy tickets for the price of 2 from the station (works out at £5:30 each). The train leaves at 6:55, gets to Wainfleet at 7:45 ( stroll to the brewery) and leaves Wainfleet at 9:10.
It would be great to see lots of wheelers there!
