Hi all - just a quick reminder that I want to order the 2012 race handbooks by the end of this month; if you've not already let me know you want one (several of you ordered at signing on) can you let me have your order and money before 29th January please; cost is £9.  for those of you who are new to competitive cycling, the handbooks lists all Open time trials (ie not club events) in the country; you can look on the website but it's often easier to plan ahead using the handbook.  If you're only likely to want to ride events in Lincolnshire, I can order you a Lincs Handbook which shows all timetrials (including club events) in Lincolnshire for just £1 - again let me know by the end of the month.

Thanks, Kath

Turbo

We're moving back to Silk Willoughby Village Hall after Christmas which is now booked from 5 January to 22 March inclusive, 7.30 - 9.30pm.  The only exception is 26 January when there is a prior booking. Price remains at £2 per head per night including refreshments and the use of a club turbo (subject to availability) if you haven't got one of your own.

Obviously, the numbers in the hall are limited by its size to around a dozen riders but we should be just OK on current attendance.  In the event that we are over-subscribed, priority will be given - on a first come, first served basis - to first claim members of Sleaford Wheelers.

Cheers

Dave

St. Barnabas Lincolnshire Bike Ride 2012

Hi,
I’m organising a sponsored cycle event in and around South Kesteven for September and I would like your help – as I’m very much a casual cyclist and am not sure of any other events that might already be taking part or indeed  the challenges ahead of organising one myself!
I know you will have plenty of other demands this year however, if you could continue reading and get back to me with your thoughts I’d be most appreciative.
I’d like to be able to include cyclists at all levels and with this in mind I have an idea for a circular route c. 90-100 miles for those wanting a challenge, but with 4 to 6 start/stop/return points for local family & casual riders to have a much shorter option. I’d like a route that doesn’t involve the major roads where possible.
I’ve chosen September to give a good lead in which will get the 2012 games out of our way but hoping that our Olympic cycling hopes might also inspire us all to get on our bikes. I hope too the weather will be reasonable and the event wont clash with too many others in the calendar.
I’ll need support to stage the event with route-planning, licensing, start & finish points, health & safety, marshals and of course publicity and promotion. I know this is only scratching the surface…..
Would you be prepared to meet/call and discuss these ideas further?
If so, could I arrange a meeting with you and any other groups/individuals to take this forward?
Kind regards

In addition to social weekend rides, Sleaford Wheelers run many events throughout the season.
On Thursday evenings we run a 7 Mile Time trial series running for two weeks from the end of March picking up after the 10 series until the end of August. We have a 10 mile Time trial series, running from April to August. These are a great way to get to know the club and a good introduction to competitive events. Club members can be registered for either league and are handicapped to give everyone a fair chance. Most of all, time trialling gives you a good indication of your personal progress throughout the season. A good place to get information about Time trialling is the Cycling Time Trial website (link on left).
There are also some tables which give you an idea of the sort of times you might aim for. There is also a link to The Veterans Time Trial Association which is for anyone over 40 years of age who has an interest in cycle racing, and specifically in time trialling.

British Cycling's guide to beginning your cycling career. Whether you want to get to grips with the absolute basics or take part in your first event, they have lots of ideas to help you get up and rolling. And with more events and rides than ever, there's never been a better time to start cycling.

Insurance:

Although insurance is not compulsory, in the event of an accident costs can be considerable (sometimes running in to several thousands of pounds) particularly if the other party is insured and their company decide you are to blame. Third party insurance is not massively expensive and can be obtained from many sources. British Cycling offer basic “Ride” membership for just £24:00 per year, but bear in mind this would not cover you for time trialling as this is considered “competitive” and would require their Silver membership currently £36:00 per year.

The National Governing Body for Cycling Time Trials in England & Wales!

Well way back in the 1880s the bicycle was the fastest thing on the road. Admittedly a horse could out-gallop it but only for a short distance. If you were into serious 'A-to-B-ing', then a good man on a bicycle was the boss!

Naturally enough (as today) people with more muscle than sense wanted to see who was fastest and so Cycle Racing on the Highway started. At first it was more akin to what we now know as road racing where all the competitors started together and him who got there first won.

Eventually some deluded bright spark invented the infernal combustion engine, fitted it to a carriage, and the motor car was born. At first a wise government, realising that nobody could ever be trusted to drive one of these new-fangled items at more than 4 mph, set a realistic speed limit for them.

So a situation arose in which people in horseless carriages started to complain about being terrorised by men, racing about on bicycles!

Further, those who could afford this motor car thing, had considerable pull with the gendarmary and so it came about that the aforementioned fuzz declared that if they caught any groups of cyclists RACING on the Highway they would be due for the chop!

This upset the Cycling hierarchy of the day so much that it was decided to take all racing off the road and only compete on closed circuits. Events of all distances even up to 24 hours duration, were thus transferred to tracks.

However there were those who still wanted to pursue their sport on the road. One of these, FT Bidlake by name, thought up a cunning plan. If each rider were to be dispatched separately and just timed over the course, he wouldn't be seen to be racing, just going about his normal business a bit quick like! Then the person covering the course in the shortest time could be (secretly) declared the winner.

So Time Trialling came into being.

Go Ride and the Barkston Heath League

Many young riders find it daunting to enter their first race and compete against more experienced riders who are often equipped with the latest bikes and specialist equipment. Go-Ride Racing offers riders under the age of 16 the opportunity to compete in a real race environment against cyclists of the same age and ability. Once novice racers have gained confidence, they are encouraged to make the step up to open regional competition. Youngsters from Sleaford Wheelers can enjoy coaching sessions on alternate Wednesdays with mini races at the end of each session, for more info contact Linda Foster on 01526 830246. More information on the Witham Wheelers and Go Ride links on the left.

The Barkston Heath League is a series of circuit race events running from March to September mainly at Barkston Heath but occasionally at other venues, races are for various youth categories as well as seniors. (see each month tabs for dates and venues or link on left)

Block Entry system

Hi all - at the last committee meeting we decided to help members enter Club Championship events by introducing a 'block entry' system - so you can now enter all club championships by filling in the attached form and sending it to Ann Pike with your £15 fee - no further money to pay for the events; if you still want to, you can of course enter championship events individually - send the usual CTT entry form (remember there is a new verion now) and £3.50 per event you want to enter.

Act quickly - Ann needs the entries for the Early Hilly (which is a championship event) by next weekend.  Just remember that for a few events you still need to send an entry form (or let Ann know by some other means) so that she can prepare a start sheet etc - those applicable events are shown on the Block Entry Form.

Last year over £900 was raised from this popular event for the Sleaford Wheelers chosen Charity - Cancer Research UK.  It is to be hoped that we can be as successful again in 2012.
Seasonal prizes for this event will be donated, as will those for the after event Raffle. After necessary expenses are deducted, all surplus monies from the entry fees, donations, tea bar and raffle will be passed on to Cancer Research UK.
Entries along with a completed CTT Entry Form and Entry Fee of £8 (Cheque made payable to D.Laidlow) should be sent to:

D.A.I. Laidlow,

Official closing date is 6pm Tuesday 27th March. I will as usual hold open for a few more days. Please note that if entering via the Internet, then Entry is likely to shut off strictly at the Official closing date and time. I have not received any information as to whether this can be over ridden.
If you experience this, then a late entry will still be acceptable by Post or By Hand in which case I should be made aware that it is on the way.

Sunday Club Run (1953)
Club run on Sunday was to Melton Mowbray, leaving the Market Place at 10:00am. In brilliant sunshine members made for Grantham where tea helped to warm up the riders. Dinner was taken at Waltham in a homely pub, shandy being the order of the day.
On the return trip the club took to the muddy back lanes, cycles having to be carried part of the way. Much cleaning and polishing has been necessary to prepare machines for this Sunday’s run to Caenby Corner.

The following week!

Last Sunday the club set out for Caenby Corner via Lincoln. The going was hard and a cup of tea in Lincoln was much enjoyed. Dinner was had at Glentham and then the club carried on to Wragby via Market Rasen. More refreshments at Bardney and the club continued home, passing through Metheringham and Ruskington. About 80 miles were covered, a good way of getting fit for the start of the racing season in March.

Closing date for the Sleaford Wheelers (Charity) 10 mile Time Trial is fast approaching. Just nine entries from the club received at this time. I am sure we can rustle up another dozen for this very popular Sleaford Wheelers Open promotion.
Cancer Research UK are again our chosen Charity and it would be nice be able to again hand over a sizeable sum of money. The more entries the event receives the greater that amount will be.
The official closing date is 6pm Tuesday March 27th, though I may well hold open for a few days longer.  But why wait. Post today or better still take advantage of the Internet Entry System that this event has opted to be a part of.  It is what so many have been waiting for. No more hunting around for the cheque book, envelope and stamp. So simple. Postal entries or by hand are still an option.
A reminder that there is a new style entry form that can be Downloaded from the CTT website. Old type form January 2007 still usable for this season only. So either form acceptable. No other form should be used.
Entries should be sent to:

Nev Crane 25 Sunday 8th July

Once again the Annual Sleaford Wheelers Nev Crane Memorial 25 Mile Time Trial is approaching. Arguably the richest event on the Lincs DC Calendar with in excess of £800 in an array of prizes up for grabs. £200 of which has again been set aside just for the Ladies. This event can boast of the quickest 25 mile time ever done in the District, with the Course Record 51-17 of Matt Bottrill in 2010. Last year the event was graced with the appearance of Wendy Houvenaghel. An astonishing 54-17, her time knocking over 5 minutes off the Ladies Course Record. Could that also be the quickest time ever recorded in the District by a Lady?
The single carriageway Course C25/35 offers a mix of flat and rolling road. Surface mainly good but a bit iffy in places. In the 5 years of this event in memory of one of the finest riders ever to come out of Lincolnshire it has boasted over 100 entries on 2 occasions. A Full Field a possibility? The others having entries in the 90's. Way above the average received for events in the District. I hope I have whetted your appetite enough for you to send in an entry. The Prospectus is as under.

BBQ and get together.

Following the final sevens run on the 30th August there will be a BBQ and get together at Silk Willoughby village hall, (food free but bring your own drinks) The striders have been invited to make it a joint event.

The next round of the PedalPushers Lincolnshire Circuit race league is on Sunday 5th August at Yarborough Sports centre promoted by Lincoln Whs. Entries still available on the day for all races including Youth, 4th and 2nd/3rd/4th category events. See BC event calendar for more details.

The last round to be held at Barkston Heath on Sunday 9th September promoted by Spalding CC will also now incorporate the East Midlands Youth circuit race championships which were cancelled earlier in the season. Separate races will now be held for Youth A and B riders which has led to some changes in the race timings. Riders wishing to be considered for the East Midlands championshiops need to pre-enter so that there eligibility can be confirmed. See BC Event calendar for more details.

SATURDAY 15th SEPTEMBER - FIT TO SPIT CHARITY RELIABILITY RIDES

There will be Reliabiltiy Trials, run under the auspices of British Cycling, for 85, 67 and 40 miles with the HQ being the Sports Pavilion at Harby which is about 3 miles south of Saxilby, which is about 6 miles north west of Lincoln.  (Ample car parking at HQ).
Reliability Trials are similar to a Club Run but open to anyone, however, they are therefore aimed at experienced cyclists who are able to maintain their own bike (or have someone they can call for assistance), follow a route from a map or written route description (or GPS map), and be able to ride the distance of the event on their own if necessary.

The rides all start out towards Thorpe on the Hill, cross the bridge over the A46, then travel eastwards before starting a clockwise circuit south of Lincoln, then rejoining the outward route at Haddington and retracing back to Harby.

The event has today gone live on the British Cycling website - www.britishcycling.org.uk If you choose the Events menu, there are various choices to filter the search, by entering 15th September, the country as England, the area as East Midlands and the Type of Event as Road Leisure, the Fit to Spit Charity Ride will be on the list.
You can then enter this event on-line and pay by card - the entry fee is £10.00.  Although you specify your distance on the application form, this can be changed on the day.

Details of the event should be on the Lincoln Wheelers website next week - www.lincolnwheelers.co.uk

There are also details already on the LRRA website - www.tinyurl.com/lincsrra  on the News menu.  There are also the application forms which can be printed off and sent in by post to me with the £10.00 fee, if preferred to online entry.

Entries can be taken on the day, but the entry fee will then be £15.00.

The first riders will be set off at 8.30am for the 85 mile ride (up until 9.30am), the 67 and 40 mile routes will start from 9.00am (up until 10.00am provisionally).

This is a CHARITY EVENT with all profits going to the Anthony Nolan Trust, but the whole event is also to particularly promote their Fit to Spit campaign, please have a look at the link below:-

http://www.anthonynolan.org/What-you-can-do/save-a-life/Are-you-fit-to-spit-.aspx

The charity helps people with all sorts of blood cancers, and they have a register of donors for stem cell transplants.  They are particularly short of male donors in the 18-30 age group, and this is what their Fit to Spit campaign aims at, to show how easy it is to became a potential donor.

A fellow club member told me about the Fit to Spit campaign some months ago, as he benefited from stem cell treatment last year, but a match could not be found for him on the UK register.  This is what has inspired him to try and promote the UK Register of Donors and I hope this event will help.

Donations of cakes will be gratefully accepted, as well as help on the day.
There is a Time Trial on Sunday with the same HQ, marshals etc are also needed for that event.  Please contact me if you can help out.

Finally, there will be overnight camping or caravanning available on Saturday evening which is £10 per unit (or free for helpers), again, contact me for further details - this will be availabe pre-booked only.

Turbo Sessions

Turbo sessions will start on Thursday 4th October from 7.30 - 9pm and continue every Thursday evening until Christmas.  We have been warned that we may have to change one or two if the school needs the hall on particular weeks.  Assuming we are getting enough people along to make the sessions viable, we will probably re-start in January and carry on until the middle to end of March.

The club has a couple of spare turbos available which will be available on a first come, first served basis.  The sessions will cost £3 per night with refreshments thrown in.

Trophies!

Several trophies are in need of refurbishment, could all trophy holdes please return them as soon as practical to Kath or Malc please.

Official opening of the Connect 2 route Saturday 22nd Sept.

10-12 O'Clock. This is a great opportunity to help promote your club, all members are asked to try to set aside a little time for this publicity event. As many as possible please in club kit, meet at the Market Place at 10:00am then to ride in group to the official event.

To all
Many thanks to everyone who helped out setting the course on Saturday and running the event on Sunday.
Once again the feedback was very positive, the entry levels high , the help freely given and the weather sunny.
Overall an excellent event.

Dennis

On behalf of the club I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to all those club members and family/friends of club members who gave up their time on Saturday and Sunday to ensure that the Cyclo Cross was a tremendous success.

The course was fantastic, the weather amazing, and the number of helpers and marshalls enabled us to put on a safe event.

Additional thanks must go to Howard who by his generosity enabled this event to take place and once again show the county that Sleaford Wheelers can run amazing courses /events and  refreshments’ to be the envy of everyone

Well done Wheelers you did Sleaford proud.

Hi guys - this year's AGM

Will be held on Monday 26 November;
The AGM is your opportunity to make sure you are involved in the Club's organisation so do come along - although you won't be pressured into taking up a Committee position remember the current Committee is not representative of the Club's age-range so if you want more involvement get someone to put your name forward as a nominee for one (or more!) of the posts.  Full details of the current post-holders on the website.

Nominations for Committee Members, and any motions you want putting on the Agenda (both should have a proposer and a seconder) should be sent to Ann Pike (apike@live.co.uk) no later than Friday 19th October please.

Signing on will be the following Monday (3rd December) and don't forget the Christmas 2-up 10-mile event on Sunday 16th December followed by the traditional buffet at The Plough in Wilsford (and christmas pud or other desserts at our house afterwards). As in the past several years, there will be a buffet meal and social at The Plough, Wilsford after the Christmas 10 starting at 12.30pm. There is a slight increase in cost this year to cover rising prices, but it's still brilliant value at £7 per head.

I'm accepting bookings from now until 9 December (no later, as I need to supply numbers to the pub). Convenient occasions to make your bookings are either the AGM on Monday 26 November or at Signing On on Monday 3 December.  Please note that I can only accept bookings with payment
upfront.   Cheques payable to Sleaford Wheelers or cash will do nicely.

Those of you who would like some pud afterwards are encouraged to walk across the road to our place where Kath will give you the benefit of her culinary skills at no cost to your goodselves.

Hope to see a good turnout this time - don't forget to bring along your 'other halves' to this enjoyable do.

Cheers

Dave

The freewheeling Competition will be held this Sunday the 18th as the weather forecast is favourable for it.
Meet at the usual time for the club run and the competition will be held on Frieston Hill on the way to the cafe.

Hi guys - this year's AGM

Will be held on Monday 26 November;

Cheers

Dave

Captains Report

9th December 2012

A good turn out this week for a tough ride out to Farndon and back. There were 13 riders in the main group initially (Me, Smedley, Jack, Big Al, Malc, Scotty, Dave & Kath Smith, Adi Mack & Craig T (briefly), Mikey, Mark and Matt T). Chris Close captained a smaller group on a shorter southern loop (Thanks Chris!). Me and Jack took the main group up through Leasingham and Smedley and Matt T took over at the Ashby turn. Kathy decided to go her own way at this point. Over the A15 into Navenby and down towards Bassingham, the wind seemed a little friendlier and the group was now making good progress. We eventually emerged from Stapleford wood with Big Al hanging a left back to Sleaford.  Malc continued down into Newark for a speedier return also. We parted company with Smedley and Jack in Balderton and they zoomed off for a blast back to Sleaford (no doubt!). Myself and Matt T took the group out to the café at Farndon with help from Dave and Scotty. Kathy joined us at the café a little later. After a well earned break and copious amounts of tea etc, the now much smaller group of Me, Mark, Matt T, Mikey, Dave, Scotty and Kath headed back with a much more agreeable tailwind. A blistering turn of pace just outside Long Bennington from Scotty split the group but the majority re-grouped through Hougham for the Gelston climb. Mikey demonstrated some good late season form by leading us over the top. Mark and Mikey left us in Hough on the Hill and the remaining four of us rolled back into Rauceby. No official club run next week as it is the Christmas 2 up. Meet at the market place though at the usual time for a warm up ride out to the start.

Captain Nick

2nd December 2012
Route: Wymondham “The wrong way round”.

A very cold day for the club run with only me, Sparrow, Malc and Ian reporting for duty at the market place. Smedley did text in to say he would join us later at the café though. Ian decided to do his own thing after Silk Willoughby, so the three of us started with a long hard ride up to the High Dyke. Down through Grantham, Malc went his own way so me and Sparrow pushed on to the café in the now splendid morning sunshine. Just near Wymondham, we passed around 20 Witham Wheelers (going the other way!) and at the windmill met up with a few Bourne Wheelers (Keith, Cliff etc.). Smedley was proving elusive, so me and Sparrow set off back with the Bourne crew with Smedley hot on our heels. We parted company with Bourne around Little Bytham and headed for home. Smedley and a bonus Priestley eventually materialised near Ropsley (in the opposite direction?) and the four of us (myself and Priestley pretty tired by now) eventually made it home. Hope to see a few more out next week weather permitting!
